    Biutiful movie review contest winners

People are always asking us here at the Straight how they can get their work published, become adored by millions, and start basking in the massive money stream headed their way.

Ok, so there is no real adoration and the last time we came close to a wad of cash was during a game of Monopoly when we were 12, but there is still something about the written word that makes it all worth it—and apparently many of you feel the same.

When we asked you to write a review of Alejandro González Iñárritu's film Biutiful starring Javier Bardem, we were blown away by all the fantastic responses we received. The Straight's senior editor Martin Dunphy read over all your Biutiful words and picked out the top three.

We want to say congratulations to Pascal Milelli for his review of the film which landed him some sweet swag, including his review published in March 24th paper and Straight.com, Academy Award Prize Pack, and private screening of a Maple Pictures film of his choice, and of course bragging rights.

Of course we had to give some props to the top three reviewers, so below you will find Milelli's review along with the second and third place winners.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to watch the film, and write your review. Keep on embracing the written word, and the rest will follow.

    1st place winner: Pascal Milelli

Biutiful, the latest from director Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, forgoes the twizzled narratives and globehopping of his earlier 21 Grams and Babel, but it's still an overwrought bummer. Uxbal (Javier Bardem), a devoted father of two, works as a go-between for illegal immigrants, shifty industrialists, and the Barcelona police. He can also communicate with the dead, for which he's slipped a few euros at funerals. Early on, Uxbal learns he has cancer, and tries to reconcile with his erratic wife Marambra, largely for the kids' sake. But it's unclear, even from gooey "Remember when...?" dialogue provided, why he ever took up with this smudgy-eyed dingaling. Then his business dealings take a bad turn. There are effective moments—a chaotic police raid; a quiet meeting between Uxbal and an older woman who understands his psychic gift; dark forms shown rolling ashore which first appear to be dead fish— but Innaritu's bleak vision is finally more tedious than tragic. The redeeming spark is Bardem: with his arresting face (that brow!) and noble bearing, he gives Uxbal a sympathetic, fluid complexity.

    Second place: Maziar Ghaderi

Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's artsy drama, Biutiful earns the attention its received from Cannes and the Oscars. Javier Bardem plays Uxbal, a desperate, devoted single father trying to survive in the sunless underbelly of Barcelona, that fans never saw in Bardem's other hit, Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona. Caught up in the gritty ghetto of piracy peddling left for marginalized Chinese and African immigrants, Uxbal battles a hopeless fight against cancer. With his own mortality knocking on his door, he attempts to mend family ties, and confront his past negligence. In hopes of a sense of belonging, Uxbal reaches for a mythicized patrimonial history by fantasizing of a father-son relationship he never had. With a disloyal brother, and a drug addict ex-wife, Bardem stunningly portrays our doomed protagonist, as he weathers through crisis after crisis. Inarritu's three feature films, Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel are centred around how tragedy can blur borders and connect strangers. Straying away from this cinematic legacy a tad, Biutiful focuses more on Bardem's character through a lens of uncompromising intimacy. This multi-layered story tells the importance of forgiveness, as the only true way of letting go and finding peace in the hereafter. A must see.

    Third place: David House

I was exhausted and emotionally drained after watching Biutiful. Javier Bardem is Uxbal, single-parent of 2 biutiful children. It is hard to reconcile the loving father with the man who takes advantage of migrant workers, moving through the seedy underbelly of Barcelona. We meet his estranged bi-polar wife. He is dying from cancer, but tells no one. He works to tie up loose ends, provide care for his kids, and help illegal immigrants threatened with deportation. Is he looking to atone for his sins, make up for his failings, deny the darkness closing in? This movie is not an escape from reality, but a stark, unflinching stare-down into the inevitability we all face. A look at the harsh realities of life on the fringes of society. A reminder of the good and bad in all of us; of human frailty, ugliness, beauty, joy, despair, confusion and terror. It is a heartbreaking slice of life, filled with turmoil and drama, grim and gripping. Pain and heaviness left the theater with me, but the gorgeous cinematography and moving music came too. The movie is sub-titled, but there won't be a Hollywood re-make. That would be like Disney repainting the Mona Lisa.
